Two Lovers and Grizzly Bears

   

Grizzly Bear's new album "Veckatimest" comes out in a couple months...

The album doesn't have a specific release date yet, but it's due in May. As we reported last year, band member Chris Taylor served as producer on Veckatimest, and frontman Ed Droste claimed that they're shooting for more of a "live sound." We're not entirely sure what that might mean, but it somehow involves recording with a children's choir, as well your favorite band's favorite neoclassical composer Nico Muhly and forever-sleepy Beach House singer Victoria Legrand. The album was named after a small, uninhabited island on the coast of Mass.

Also, Joaquin Phoenix's supposedly last film, "Two Lovers" is really really good. Its pretty realistic and ambiguous when dealing with true love,  growing up and the  uncertainties of the future.  Hopefully this wasn't his last movie, because he's really amazing in it and I'm not too sure his hip hop career looks legit.

DM STITH

This album is amazing. Its really warm, Grizzly Bearish avant folk. Its beautiful, creepy, floating, magical, mysterious music. It gives you the feeling of exploring your childhood attic and discovering all the critters that live in the corners and ceiling. DM is on the same label as Sufjan, and I think this album is much more mature then what Sufjan's done recently. Be on the lookout for this guy. And he's from Bloomington, Indiana too, so thats cool.

Chaotic, chiming punk music set to waltz rhythms. I don't really know how to describe their music; it has a lot of yelling, a lot of heavy drums and light pianos. I really really like it.

DAN DEACON

Dan plays with a 14-piece percussion group and the results are a modern classical symphony dominated by video game sounds. Its much more ambitious and mature than any other his other stuff. The first track gave me chills and the rest of the record is equally as good. Some of it goes overload, but most of it is very melodic and ear-pleasing...

The girl from The Knife does a side project. Kind of surreal, Bjork like electro. Its not very catchy, but it has tons of great ambience and atmosphere.  The video for "When I Grow Up" is really really brillant, in a creepy way.

High Places is a  tribal beat and tropicalia/ lo-fi bedroom pop thing. The record has a fuzzy vibe to it, one that really compliments the sunny melodies. The song "Jump In" is so upbeat and inspiring. 

SAUL WILLIAMS

Trent Reznor produced his "Niggy Tardust" album and the result is basically NIN with hip hop vocals. It sounds way different from any other hip hop/rap musician out there. His vocal style is more spoken word then the standard hip hop, its great nonetheless.

Leo Tolstoy-for his insightful writings on how to live well and live deeply. for his commitment to the good of humanity, the respect towards animal life, his pacifism and anarchistic beliefs.

Paul Thomas Anderson- for his intense, frantic, ambitious films about family, love, loneliness, and other shizz. for making Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia, two of my fave movies. 

Animal Collective-these guys called Avey Tare, Deakon, Panda Bear and Geologist. for making optimistic, freakish, magical, true alternative music without being stuck up or unapproachable. for making songs like The Purple Bottle, Winter's Love, Doggy, and Brothersport.

Tim and Eric- having a wildly absurd, offbeat, scary good sense of humor. for making me laugh at things that don't make any sense. for not relying on actual jokes to be funny. for making me cringe and laugh hysterically at the same time. 

Miranda July-for her art, music, lit, films, whatever she does. for her sweetness and strange sense of humor when dealing with risky, messy subjects. for being a first timer who wins major awards at major fests.

Dad-for significantly influencing so many factors in my life. for our deep discussions and pondering. for supporting our decisions and being an open and accepting person. for your loud mock yelling. for your "Quincy-speak". for your homemade pizza recipe. for helping us learn how to skateboard and building a jungle gym in the yard. for making home videos with us when we were little. for your love of good conversation and music. for your love and impact in our family, among other things.

favorite discoveries of the past year...

Child of God & Goodbye Chunky Rice

Both really great, both complete opposites. Child of God is poetic, terrifying, gentle and graphic, its basically the story of a "loveless" Texas Chainsaw Massacre character told from the most compassionate and non-judgmental perspective. It gives us the idea that no matter how damaged or misguided he is, he is still a Child of God. Its a powerful metaphor for any villain or outcast in the world.

Goodbye Chunky Rice is a graphic novel/comic book about the undying bonds between lovers, friends and people in general. Its written from the same author of Blankets, one of my faves. Its a great little read, full of hummingbirds, siamese twins, a mouse and a turtle. 

Learning to Love You More is a whimsical art project that lets anyone play along with its demands. Some objectives are: Create a uplifting banner, take a picture under your bed, recreate for favorite childhood movie poster. I love it.

Silent Light & Mouchette

One film is about adultery and divine love in the confines of a conservative religious community. Its a impressionistic and dreamlike work, full of otherworldly images and sounds. It starts off at a slow pace, until tragedy and something very strange and miraculous happens.  It gives viewers a glimpse of the magical and mystical in life, with the effect of a fairy tale or biblical story. Its definitely worth watching. The other film is about a poor girl with the worst life ever. Its sad and transcendent at the same time. 

Frightened Rabbit 

I have to thank my roomate for introducing me to this band. They're Scottish. "While I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to Earth."
